An update on the new GRN Solid-state player.
As the new hand wind MP3 player gets ready for production, GRN has announced the name and expected pricing.
The player is called the "Saber".
A "saber" (or "sabre") is a sword in English and French. In Spanish (the very first language GRN recorded), "el saber" means "knowing".
So what is happening with the Saber player? Here is the latest update.
Manufacture of the tools for the injection moulding of the case and other plastic parts has begun. Concurrently development of the electronic circuit board is underway. Work remains to be done on developing the firmware, which will determine exactly how the player functions in response to the keypad input from the user.
Assembly will start in the first half of 2008. We have a small core of volunteers who are ready and eager to start work assembling the new player when the time comes. We will be looking to add to that team once production gets into full swing mid year.
Pricing
The price is expected to be A$85/US$75 for the base player, including 1GB on-board memory.
The price for mission agencies, missionaries and indigenous churches will be introduced at around A$45/US$40 for the same unit.
Anticipated accessories are: SD memory cards for extra storage, AC/DC charger, solar panel, earphones, and USB cable. Availability and price of these items is not yet known.
Field Testing
We have begun to compile a list of people who would like to help us field test the player when it is available. If you would like to be a part of this testing please contact the Australian office.
Uses and pre-orders
Apart from the expect missions and church related applications, this player may be very useful for government or NGO sponsored education programs. If you are aware of program where this player may be useful, please let us know.
