After Jesus had given much food to the many people, He told the many people to return home.
He told his disciples to go into their boat and travel to the other side of the big lake [Lake Galilee in Galilee province]. Then he by himself [alone] went up to a high place. It became dark [night]. He prayed there.
In the night, Jesus was alone. His disciples were far away in their boat on the big lake. A strong wind [storm] began to blow against them.
Water from the lake was pouring [entering] into their boat which was starting to sink into the water [lake]. The men were pulling hard with the paddles [oars].
In the dark [middle of the] night, Jesus came to his disciples who were in the boat. He was walking on the water as someone walks on hard ground!
When Jesus was close to his disciples who were all in the boat, they saw him coming near. They were very afraid. One shouted to the others, “Look!! It is a ghost [spirit]!!”
Jesus spoke loudly to them, “Have courage! It is I, Jesus! I am coming to you [all]! Trust me. Stop fearing!”
Peter was one of Jesus’ disciples who were in the boat. He called out to Jesus, “Lord, if it is really you (and not a ghost/spirit), tell me to come to you walking on the water as if I was walking on the ground.”
Jesus answered Peter, “Come [to me! Walk on the water]!”So Peter went out of the boat and began walking to Jesus on the water as a person walks on the ground.
But when Peter focused on [looked around and saw] the strong wind and the big waves and he was very, very fearful. He began to sink [go under the water]. So, Peter shouted to Jesus, “Lord, rescue [save] me!”
Immediately, Jesus reached out and grabbed [held] Peter so that Peter stabilized in the water [stayed above the water/did not go under the water]. And Jesus said to Peter, “Do not doubt who I am. Trust [believe] me.”
Then Jesus and Peter both got into the boat. And [just then] the wind stopped! The water became flat! Jesus’ disciples were very surprised! They all worshipped him!
One said, “Now we know certainly that God has sent you. You are God’s Son [God become a man] and you have God’s power.”
