Listen, do you hear what I do? Those are ships.
One night after Jesus had been talking to hundreds of people all day long, He went out in a boat with His disciples and started to go to the other side of the lake. Jesus was tired, so He went to the back of the boat and lay down with His head on a pillow.
** (1) At first there was just a gentle breeze blowing and the little ripples slapped the sides of the boat, but suddenly the wind began to blow hard. A great storm of wind came up. The waves rose high and they rocked the ship from side to side. They got higher and higher, then splash!, crash!, they would spill into the boat, and the disciples were afraid. But Jesus was lying down, fast asleep. At last the disciples were so scared they woke Jesus up crying, "Master, don't You care if we drown?" "Save us!"
Jesus answered, "Why are you afraid? Why don't you trust Me?" (He knew about the storm even though He was asleep, but He wanted them to trust Him to take care of them.) He got up and spoke to the winds and the sea saying, "Peace, be still."
(2) And everything was quiet - no wind - no splashing roaring waves - no storm. The sea was peaceful and quiet. Everyone on the ship was amazed to see that even the wind and the waves obeyed the Lord.
Could anything be more wonderful? The best of it all is that Christ can take care of us today just like He took care of the disciples then. But it makes Him sad when we don't believe Him.
Sometimes trouble and temptation come to us just like a storm but Jesus will always keep us safe if we ask Him to, and trust Him. He says so in the Bible over and over again.
Here are some of the verses that tell of God's care for His children who love Him: and received Him as their Saviour.
"He cares for you." "The angel of the Lord encamps round about them that fear Him and delivers them." "The Lord is good. Happy is the man who trusts in Him." "The young lions do lack and suffer hunger, but they who seek the Lord shall not want any good thing." "He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings shall you trust." "You shall not be afraid for the terror by night nor for the arrow that flies by day." "There shall no evil befall you." "For He shall give His angels charge over you to keep you in all your ways." "If we ask the Lord to help us, this is the promise that He has given: - 'He shall call upon me and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble.' "
