"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first." (Jn 15:18)
I have been becoming more aware of the increasingly negative comments being expressed towards Christians and Christianity in the media. Some TV presenters seem to look for every opportunity to ridicule or put down Christians or a Christian perspective. It is perhaps sad that many such opportunities are provided by the unfortunate actions of members of the 'Christian' community. However, this alone does not account for what is becoming a concerted attack on the Christian faith.
I am disturbed by the trend but was reminded this morning (on the day of writing this column) of Jesus words recorded in John 15:18 (above). It is inevitable that even when Christians live upright honest lives and seek the good of those around them that they will be hated - by some at least. We cannot expect any better treatment than what was handed out to our Lord and Master.
Two other passages of Scripture came to my aid! James 5:7 "Be patient then my brothers, until the Lord's coming", and Galatians 6:9 "Let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up."
May God give us genuine love and pity for those who in their blindness lash out at the name and cause of Christ. With God's help let us follow Paul's injunction to "Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse." (Rom 12:14)
