We live in a world at war, where combat has become so expected that those of us removed from the battlefield often forget that whole generations in parts of the world have only known conflict. For them there has been no peace, only destruction.
As Christ followers, we know that one day our Father will bring a lasting peace to earth-there will be no more war. We also know from scripture that in addition to the earthly conflicts that ravish creation, the whole world is engulfed in a battle that is fought unseen by many, but which has far more serious effects. It is a spiritual battle going on for the hearts of men, women and children, and our enemy is vicious.
Paul warned the Ephesians to be prepared for this battle; one not to be fought with military armor but spiritual armor and weapons forged by our Father the King. The battle belongs to the Lord: A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God's armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. (Eph 6, NLT)
We who have tasted lasting peace that is beyond understanding and which only Christ gives, are soldiers in this fight. Paul told Timothy to "Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus." (2 Tim 2.3, NLT) We are at war and it is a war that must first be fought with prayer. Paul told the church to "Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere." (Eph 6, NLT)
Be a good soldier. Use your weapons. Stay in the fight. The battle belongs to the Lord.
