Chris Mason reports on his recent recording trip.

The Lord gave me the privilege of going to New Caledonia in late August to record in the Paicî language. During my two weeks stay there it was a real joy for me to meet and work with the local people. They were very friendly and hospitable, especially the Christian folk.

French is the national language of the country so I had many opportunities to use my basic knowledge of this language. Apart from French, there are around 30 languages or dialects spoken in New Caledonia. In the Paicî language there are approximately 6,000 native speakers.

The Paicî recording trip was a joint partnership with two other Christian missions (Wycliffe Bible Translators and Scripture Gift Mission). The material that I recorded came from two publications - one on the life of the Apostle Peter and another called "Jesus has the Power to Save". Both these publications are almost entirely taken straight from Scripture.

I am thankful for the great job that Ian Flaws did in organizing my trip. Ian is an SIL missionary working on translating the Bible into the Paicî language. He accompanied me during my time in New Caledonia and arranged for 5 men to do the readings. Ian speaks the Paicî language so he was able to check what was being said during the recording sessions. If there were any mistakes or passages that didn't quite have the right expression then the sentence or paragraph was recorded again.

Using a computer, I have edited and put together a program of what I recorded.

Three hundred cassettes have been sent to New Caledonia. There are plans to use these Paicî cassettes and booklets for the first time at a village festival in early November. Please pray that God would bless and use these for His glory.
