Philippines Facts

The Philippines has a population of 90 million, on over 7,100 islands. The capital is Manila.

The peoples are Malayo-Indonesian Filipinos (approx. 95%), Mixed races (3.5%), Chinese (2.5%) and others (0.2%).

The literacy rate was 95% in 2000.

Official languages are Filipino (based on Tagalog) and English. There are about 210 other languages.

The Philippines has a mixed agricultural and industrial economy.

It was a Spanish colony from 1565 to 1898, hence there is still a Catholic majority. Christians make up 93% of the population. (Catholic 67%, Protestant 6% , Independent 15.%) Muslims number over 5%. There is freedom of religion.
