A Minute with the USA Director - May 2007

By Colin Stott, Executive Director of GRN USA

An essential characteristic for any Christian worker is that of perseverance. This is the ability to stay the course and continue doing the right thing in the face of delays, disappointments and setbacks. A good example of perseverance was shown by our Nepal team. We reported recently that they were finally able to make some initial evangelism recordings for a small nomadic group they had been tracking for 20 years. They had come close to recording their language on several occasions - but there had always been setbacks. But they didn't give up! Now, a big hurdle has been crossed towards introducing this group to Jesus.

I like what it says in Hebrews 10: 35 - "So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised." I often wonder how much Christian work has fallen by the wayside because we failed to persevere. We gave up before seeing what God would do, and opted for our own schedule rather than His.

At any given time in our work there are usually many things for which we are waiting on God to fulfill. From a human perspective it's easy to lose heart when we don't see something become a reality within what we consider to be a reasonable length of time. It is at these times that we need to walk by faith and not by sight. It is during these times of waiting that God does a deep inner work in us - developing endurance and perseverance that wouldn't otherwise happen. A seed when planted in the ground needs time to take root as the invisible forces of nature do their work. To get impatient and dig up the seed to see what is going on can ruin the future plant. So we too need to wait patiently while God does His "invisible" work in us.

Right now in our work there are many vital projects that are awaiting people, funding or open doors. Often we feel stretched to the limit in our waiting. But as a prayer partner recently encouraged me: "Don't (give up)! This is not a time for wavering in faith in the One True God." God has His time and our part is simply to trust Him and wait for His timing knowing that those who wait upon the Lord will never be ashamed.
