What better occasion than the Katherine Christian Convention (May 5-7 '07) for the Dedication of the whole Bible translated into the KRIOL language. This year the Convention also celebrates its 40th Anniversary. Up to 1,000 people are expected to attend from all over the Top End. KRIOL speakers are just one of the indigenous groups that regularly participate in the Bible teaching, worship in song and dance, and sharing in fellowship with their fellow heirs of our Father, 'Dedi God'.
KRIOL is spoken by some 30,000 people from eastern NT across to the northwest of WA. The translation of the Scriptures into KRIOL began in the late '70s, when a couple from SIL (Wycliffe Bible Translators) began working with two Aboriginal couples. The team has changed, developed and grown over time. The 'whitefellas' became the facilitators and consultants but the Aboriginal folk increasingly took up the workload of the translation.
In 1985, we moved to the Top End to establish a base for our GRN ministry. We have been privileged to work and fellowship with many believers to make God's Word available in the heart language of various groups. Our recordings ranged from Christian songs to soundtracks (for GRN Bible picture books and for scripture based videos such as the 'Jesus' film) as well as sections of the KRIOL Bible.
One of our projects was to record programs based on pamphlets produced by Scripture Gift Mission. We first recorded these in KRIOL, then in other languages as well. Key topics included Marriage, Death, Sickness, Fear and Discipleship. The local missionary was very concerned for people to understand how God related to them in daily situations. He wanted a recording that would explain what happens to a non-believer or to a Christian after death, and one which presented the Gospel to those who were mourning. These recordings were well received so SGM has encouraged the recording of similar programs in other languages around the world.
We are now remastering many of these programs to make CD versions so that they can continue to tell the Good News well into the 21st century.
