Down through the centuries, storytelling has been a most effective way to communicate. Whether it is groups sitting around campfires or children sitting at the feet of their elders ... telling stories has been a powerful way to stir hearts and imaginations and pass on key information from one generation to another.
Our Lord Jesus Himself was the best communicator who ever lived. He used stories a lot when He taught the crowds about the Kingdom of God. He created a hunger for truth in the hearts of the people through His many parables. Today storytelling is still an effective way to reach seeking hearts. The thing we often remember most about sermons is not the "three main points," but the illustrations!
Since its beginnings, Gospel Recordings has followed Christ's method and used Bible stories to communicate spiritual truths with many wonderful results. One memorable example happened several years ago. A missionary couple from another mission were assigned to go to an unreached tribe in Burkina Faso in Africa. When they arrived they were amazed to find that this "unevangelized" tribe already knew about Jesus. Fifteen years before, a Gospel Recordings team had made recordings for this tribe in their language. The people had memorized all the stories on those recordings and had known about the way of salvation for all those years before any missionary arrived!
Today lives are still captivated and convicted by the Bible stories on our tapes. A national evangelist tells us, "Since the day I received the Gospel tapes, there are 50 converts from this village, 20 from a farm nearby and 13 more from other villages."
An old man in Zimbabwe told a Christian worker, "All my life I offered sacrifices to my ancestors and prayed to them for help. Now some people came to my home to play tapes about God and his creation. For the first time in my life I begin to understand about the true God. I am glad I heard this message before I die."
To be most effective, the stories must be told with a local voice without the distraction of a foreign accent. This combination of Bible stories, a local voice and the prayers of God's people helps the old, old story to keep on transforming lives the world over.
