We thank God for our newest full-time member of GRN Australia. Here is his story...
by Simon Beech
I first came to learn about the Lord in 1984 when I joined the Armadale Boys' Brigade in Western Australia at the age of 8 years. But it wasn't until 1990 that I gave my heart to Him at a B.B. camp. During the next few years I had many ups and downs in my life, but I knew that if I gave it all to God that I could and would get through.
In 1994 I started work at St John of God Hospital, Murdoch. I ended up staying there for 8 years. I climbed the ladder, doing and saying anything to get promotion. I had forgotten all that I had been taught at home and at church; it was 'all about me' and how I could get what I wanted, not considering how anyone else felt.
I went to church infrequently, started drinking and staying out all hours of the night, but through all of that time God was still with me. It was not until 1997 after a night of drinking with my friends, that I bumped into an elder from my church at work. He asked me how I was doing and how my walk with the Lord was, so I told him, "not so good". After talking for about 4 hours, he gave me a passage from the Bible to read - Isaiah 40:30 - 31 - "Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall stumble and fall; but they who wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not grow weary, they shall walk and not grow faint." That night I recommitted my life to the Lord. To this day, I still go to this passage when I am feeling down.
In 1998 I felt the Lord challenging me to be baptized, so after much prayer I was. In 2000 my church split, so I found myself moving to a new church. Looking back on the situation, I can see that God had plans not only for me but for my old church as well.
During my time at Armadale Congregational Church, I was actively involved as part of the worship team, an officer in the 41st West Australian Dale Boys' Brigade Company, leadership in the youth group and the sound ministry.
I also had a heart for missions. In December 2002, I went on Wokabaut to the Solomon Islands with Global Recordings Network, Australia, to distribute Bible picture books and cassette tapes of the Gospel. It was the 2002 Wokabaut that got me interested in the work of GRN. On my return from the trip, I enrolled in the Bible College of Western Australia in the Creative Arts Course, majoring in Sound Reinforcement.
In January 2004, I was visiting Sydney and contacted Graydon Colville. He gave me application forms to join the mission. I took them home and prayed about it and after a few months, I finally submitted my application. In June, I was asked to come to Sydney for an Interview with the Board. In August I had the great news that I had been accepted to start work in February 2005.
In December 2004 I went on another 'Wokabaut' to the Solomon Islands. It was affirmation that this is where God wants me to be. Since moving to Sydney, I have joined the Castle Hill Boys' Brigade Company and fellowship at the Castle Hill Baptist Church. Now I can see God's leading in my life and how he has brought me here. One day, if it is God's will, I hope to work for Global Recordings Network in the Solomon Islands.
