On the streets of Calcutta, a man sleeps on a sidewalk as hundreds of people pass him by. He has no real hope of a better life. This is his life.

In one of India's five hundred thousand villages, another man, an ardent worshiper of Kali, the Hindu goddess of death and wrath, lays his offering for her at the temple even as his family goes without food.

What do these men have in common with you and me? They have a special place in the heart of their Creator who loves all of us dearly and longs for us to love in return.

Does this man know of the Water of Life?

With a population of over a billion people, India is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse countries in the world. About three-quarters of the 1600 vernacular languages have little or no Christian resources or witness in them.

Reaching all of these language groups for Christ is the mission of the Church. Everyone needs to hear the promise in God's word "that whoever calls on the Name of the Lord will be saved."

This begs the questions that Paul asked: "How can they call on the One whom they haven't believed in? - and how can they believe in the One of whom they haven't heard?" The people need to be told - and God has put it on our hearts to go and tell.

It's interesting that whenever Jesus shared the truth with the multitudes, He did so in the people's own language and He used carefully chosen stories that His listeners could relate with.

This is our strategy too. Over the next ten years we plan to recruit, train and deploy at least 20 teams to go throughout India to record carefully chosen Bible stories and teachings in 1000 languages that are still without the scriptures. This initiative is called Project India. The objective is simple: To tell the story of Jesus in every Indian language!

Because of difficulties and dangers that our teams may face, especially from the growing militant religions, we are seeking to mobilize much prayer. The battle for souls has to be won in the heavenlies first in order for breakthroughs to come on the ground.

We are also asking God to release all the resources necessary for this endeavor. Our joyful expectation is to see the good news make great progress into areas where Jesus is not known and to see lives transformed by the gospel.
