About Indonesia

Indonesia is the biggest archipelago in the world. It has 17,508 islands and 5,150 km long.

The Republic of Indonesia was proclaimed as an independent country on 17 August 1945.

At present (2008) the population is about 242 million. This is the 4th biggest population after China, India and USA. There are more than 500 tribes speaking over 1000 languages and dialects. The national language is Bahasa Indonesia. Each tribe has its own dress, culture, art, and special food.

The main religions that the government permits are Islam, Christianity (Catholic and Protestant), Hinduism, Buddhism, and traditional religions.

This country is blessed with fertile land, vast natural resources, and great beauty.
