... is the country situated on the mountainous border between China (Tibet) and India. This small Hindu kingdom is home to approx. 25 million people, less than 2% of whom are Christian. "Maoist rebels" and political instability have resulted in widespread violence and uncertainty.
In the 1960's only a few dozen Nepali believers were known. Today there may be as many as 500,000 and the church is growing rapidly. There have been times of severe persecution and there are signs that more persecution may lie ahead.
The team in Nepal are working under difficult conditions to record languages, distribute materials and enable people to hear the Word of God in their own language. Many strategic partnerships have been developed to facilitate the spread of the Word of God.
There are some 130 languages and dialects. Bibles and Scripture portions exist in some of those languages but literacy is very low (28%) especially in the many villages.
About 100 languages have been recorded in Nepal, but distribution has taken place in only half of them. More than 600 "Messenger" hand wind cassette players have been distributed and are in use. Many villages are without power.
Evangelists who use the LRI materials have seen over 700 people come to Christ from among their own people who live near Mount Everest.
