Chris and Cheryl Mason

Chris and Cheryl are both trained recordists. They have been with the mission for over 16 years.

After leaving the farm and working in Melbourne for a number of years Chris got restless. He purchased a backpack and travelled around the world for 2 years. However when he finally returned home to Geelong he found marked changes in some of his family who had come to a fresh faith in Jesus. This was the catalyst for him becoming a Christian.

Cheryl was an atheist but after several years of contact with a loving church in Brisbane, accepted Jesus into her life, just before she turned 17. Some time later God led her to learn more of the Bible and it was while training at the WEC Missionary Training College in Launceston that she met Chris.

Previously in GRN they have been based in Kenya, Africa and (after learning French) have travelled through 4 Francophone countries in Africa doing itinerate recording. God even gave them the priviledge of recording in legendary Timbuktu!

They have also been based in Sydney for over 10 years. During most of that time Cheryl cared for the growing family at home while Chris made a number of recording trips overseas, in between doing general studio work, such as making copy masters and duplicating CDs.

A NEW ADVENTURE

The start of 2007 saw the family embarking on a new adventure as they responded to God's clear call and moved to Port Vila, Vanuatu. With some 112 languages spread over 80 islands they have plenty of recording work ahead of them.

These days Chris makes recording trips to other islands and returns home to edit and program the material. He has also been working on a sizable project with an SIL Bible translation team to record Luke's Gospel in the South East Ambrym language. Soon villagers (many who have limited literacy skills) will be able to listen to God's Word on small solid-state players.

Cheryl stays home in Port Vila with the children. Daniel (10), Timmy (8) and Renee (6) attend a local English-speaking school and are also gradually learning the local pidjin, called Bislama from some of their friends.

They find the local ni-van people are generally very friendly. Swimming and snorkelling have become a fun part of their new life in Vanuatu. Summer heat and homesickness have been a challenge, especially for the children. The Lord's help and protection has been very real as they have faced sickness and other difficulties during their first year in the South Pacific.

GRN RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE

Chris has been actively promoting the ministry amongst different denominations and missions as there is very limited Christian resources available to Pastors and Sunday School teachers. So far people have been most interested to see the colourful Bible picture books and learn of the opportunity to have Christian CDs and cassettes made in their local languages.

Black magic is strong through-out Vanuatu and holds many in fear, even some who are Christians. Working in partnership with local believers, the Masons look forward to the materials getting out into the island villages, so that men, women and children can more fully understand how much God loves them and has an amazing, liberating plan for their lives.

Sometimes things happen which are potent reminders that this country is so different to Australia. Last week Daniel came home worried. He said he would get Saturday detention unless he came to school on Friday with a machete.
