With a population of over 1 billion (in A.D.2000) India is one of the most populous nations in the world. It is, in fact, many nations within one nation. About 30 states and more than 1,652 language groups (1991 census) make up this nation. It is a land of tremendous religious diversity and these days, great religious tensions. The majority of the people are Hindu (82%), but there are also large communities of Muslims (12.12%), Sikhs (1.94%), Christians (2.34%) plus Buddhists, Jains and some smaller minority groups. Official literacy figures stand at 62% (44% in 1981).

Enoch with the new recruits This year, the current staff of Enoch Anthony (Director), O'Niell Samuel and Rachel Singh, Swapan Roy, Sampson Christopher, John Varathan, Rocky James and Dinesh Kumar, have been joined by 8 new 'trainees'. These new recruits (seen right) are already active in distribution and helping the recordists. It is planned to run a training course for them next year when the Centre will also be converted to digital recording and editing technology.

Project India

It is estimated that recordings need to be made in another 1200 languages to make it possible for every person to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ in the language they call their own. The whole of the Global Recordings Network is committed to work with GRA India to record these languages over the next 10 years. To do this, language survey work needs to be done, new recordists need to be trained, networks need to be established for distribution and equipment needs to be supplied. Above all the project needs to be 'covered' with prayer. The spiritual opposition is formidable.

Finance required to provide training and equipment.
Planning for the proposed training course in 2003 and for Alex Shaw coordinating arrangements.
For good recordings to be made, widespread distribution and effectiveness of GRN materials.
For the government and leadership of the country.
For a stop to religious conflict and violence.
For protection for the Christian communities of India.
