Claire Meckler was an SIM missionary colleague of Helen Gemeren. Since leaving Sudan in 1982, Helen has worked with GRN Australia. In April 2008 Claire wrote . . .

"Dear Helen,
Rumour has it that Gospel Recordings had a role in the preparation of these Dinka scripts many years ago when the old hand crank players were used. Is this right? I'm wondering if it's possible to track down an English translation of the Dinka Padang sermons and songs that are now being played on the audio players. The people in our area are so blessed by the words, that they play them over and over..."

Subsequent research tracked down Rob Harris, a GR Recordist from past years who is now a pastor in England. This old photo of Rob beside the Nile, was taken by Helen in 1979 when he stayed with her at Melut, Southern Sudan, while making the Dinka recordings now in use!

This was Rob's reply...

"Yes, these are the recordings I did in May 1979 - in DINKA: Padang, SHILLUK and other languages. The recordings were memorable because I waited a long time for the language helpers to turn up - weeks! ... it is so encouraging to know that they are being used and appreciated. You do the work and move on and then wonder if anything ever comes of it..."

And now...

Dinka youngsters listen to the Gospel and songs recorded long before they were born, while older students cleverly amplify the message played on the little MegaVoice player.

Members of the SIM team in Sudan have agreed to help field test the new GRN Saber MP3 player now being assembled in Australia. The harsh conditions of the Sudan will be a good place to assess its durability. The Saber will enable larger groups to listen with it's louder volume and high quality sound. The Saber batteries can be recharged with the hand wind mechanism. It is another unique instrument for spreading the Gospel message for a long time to come.
